Introduction

Imagine you have two computers in front of you.
One is complicated; it needs a technician and hours of setup.
The other is simple: you can easily unbox it, set it up, plug it in, and start using it yourself.

Which one would you choose?

At Apni Pathshala, something interesting is happening with our Apna PCs. Students, teachers, and POD leaders are loving these computers more than ever. Why?
When they set up the device themselves, they start feeling proud, confident, and responsible for it.

Without realizing it, they’re becoming part of a powerful psychological idea, the IKEA Effect.
But what is Apna PC, what does this effect mean, and how is Apni Pathshala using it with Apna PCs? Chalo Seekhe.

What is Apna PC?

Apna PC is a computer system initiated by Apni Pathshala that gives new life to old and refurbished CPUs by combining them with new peripherals and transforming them into powerful learning tools. These computers are distributed to PODs (Digital Learning Centers) across India to help students, teachers, and communities gain access to quality digital education.

What Is the IKEA Effect?

The IKEA Effect is a concept from psychology that explains how people value something more when they help create or assemble it.

The name comes from the furniture brand IKEA, where customers build their own furniture at home. Studies show that when people put effort into building something, even a simple shelf or chair, they start liking it more. It becomes their creation, and that emotional connection makes it special.

It’s not just about furniture. The IKEA Effect applies to anything people build, from art projects to digital tools.

And now, this same effect is being seen in the world of education through Apni Pathshala’s Apna PCs.

How Apna PC Is Creating the IKEA Effect

At Apni Pathshala, we have opened more than 120 PODs (Digital Learning Centers) across India and plan to reach 10,000 in the coming years.
In the early days, our team used to send engineers to every POD to set up the computers.

But soon we realized two important things:

  1. We couldn’t send engineers to every corner of India.
  2. The real goal wasn’t just to provide technology, it was to build digital confidence.

So, we made a change.
We started sending Apna PCs directly to the PODs and encouraged them to set up the computers themselves. If they needed help, we connected them with our trusted service partner Scogo, who guided the leaders and teachers remotely.

At first, some were nervous. Many said, “We can’t do this; it’s too technical.”
But everything changed when we showed them how simple it really was.
Teachers were surprised to see how easily they could set up the systems, and we even encouraged them to involve students in the process.

Soon, students and teachers began setting up their Apna PCs with confidence. Whenever they faced confusion, our service partner was ready to assist them. Students proudly told their friends, “We set up this computer ourselves!

Initially, we introduced this idea to make digital learning start faster, but we didn’t expect PODs to love it this much.

Sumit Kapoor, TechVeer Naigon (Dadar) POD Coordinator, shared,

“I didn’t think setting up computers could be this easy.
I should plan a session on this to teach more students.”

Students enjoyed the experience because many of them had never even turned on a computer before. Now, they not only knew how to start one but also how to set it up. That connection made them more interested in digital learning.

Some Zilla Parishad PODs even reported an increase in student attendance after introducing the Apna PC in schools.

POD leaders began sharing photos and videos of their successful setups, proudly showing their centers becoming digitally active. But the real surprise came next.

The IKEA Effect in Action

Something unexpected started happening after we introduced the new setup process.

TeachToEarn provides affordable PCs, known as Apna PCs, to individuals eager to learn digitally. By offering up to a 50% subsidy, they make it easier for anyone to own a computer and access technology. Their initiative has already helped many people acquire computers at very low rates.

But once people started setting up the computers themselves, everything changed.

The demand for Apna PCs shot up. Orders began to rise faster than we could deliver.
POD leaders who once waited for engineers now felt confident to manage everything on their own.

This simple idea, giving people the chance to build, install, and understand their own computer, created a deep connection.
They started caring for the PCs like something they personally owned.

That’s the IKEA Effect in real life:
People value Apna PCs more because they helped bring them to life.

How Apna PC Transforms Everyone

WhoWhat HappensMyth Broken
POD LeadersThey discovered they no longer needed a technician. Even students could install the PCs easily.“You need engineers to install computers.”
TeachersThey led the setup process with students and made sure everything was safe.“Teachers can’t handle technical setups.”
StudentsThey learned that setting up Apna PCs is simple and could even teach their friends to do it.“Computers are complicated for kids.”
ParentsThey built trust in PODs after seeing their children’s growing confidence in technology.“Only experts can handle computers safely.”

Conclusion

The IKEA Effect shows us something simple but powerful:
When people build something themselves, they value it more.

At Apni Pathshala, we’ve turned that psychology into a real learning experience.
Each Apna PC that a student or teacher sets up is more than a piece of technology; it’s a small step toward empowerment.

For POD leaders, it’s a tool of trust and productivity.
For teachers, it’s a way to guide students through hands-on learning.
For students, it’s their first step into digital creation.
And for parents, it’s a window into their child’s growing confidence and curiosity.

Apna PCs are transforming digital learning, one setup at a time, and proving that ownership inspires growth.
